Below I have included details on a number of my favourite players
Wally Lewis - Darren Lockyer - Mal Meninga - Gordon Tallis - Alan Langer - Justin Hodges
Wally Lewis aka "The King" was born on the 1st of December, 1959. Wally was one of Australia's most exceptional rugby league players, representing Australia in 33 test matches and Queensland in 31 State of Origin games. He captained the Brisbane Broncos between 1988-1989, Queensland 1981-1991 and Australia 1984-1989. Wally is now retired from the sport, but is still part of the rugby league community and is a respected commentator for the Nine Network and Fox Sports. |
Darren Lockyer was born on the 24th of March, 1977. Darren is one of the true legends of the National Rugby League, currently captaining the Brisbane Broncos, Queensland and Australian rugby league teams. Lockyer currently plays in the five-eighth position, having moved there from his previous position of fullback in 2004. He is widely considered one of the finest players in the modern game, however was an avid Australian rules footballer in Brisbane before his parents moved west to Roma where rugby league was the favoured sport. Lockyer made his debut with the Broncos as an eighteen year-old five-eighth in 1995, winning the club's rookie of the year award. Lockyer quickly showed his versatility in the centres and at fullback, proving himself as a creative attacking player, a safe defender under the high ball and a skilled goal-kicker. In 1997, Lockyer first gained representative honours for Queensland and has never looked back. He is a true queenslander who has done the state proud for a number of years. |
Malcolm Meninga was born on the 8 of July, 1960 in Bundaberg, Queensland. As a player he was a legendary centre who made the most appearances and scored the most points of any player in the green and gold jersey and has been inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame. Meninga has previously coached the Canberra Raiders and is now the current coach of the Queensland State of Origin team. |
Gorden Tallis was born on the 27 July, 1973 in Townsville, Queensland. He is now retired from the game but was once a passionate footballer who played from 1992 to 2004. He captained Australia, Queensland and the Brisbane Broncos and is a Clive Churchill Medallist. Nicknamed the "Raging Bull" for his fearless running game, at the peak of his career, Tallis was renowned as the best second-row forward in the world. He is currently a commentator for the Fox Sports network, as well as an NRL Board Member. |

Allan Langer was born on the 30 of July, 1966 in Ipswich, Queensland. He is often nicknamed "The Little General", and commonly known as "Alf" or "Alfie". The former rugby league half-back was one of the best players of the 1980s and 1990s, representing Australia on several occasions and taking the record for most State of Origin appearances of any player. He played most of his career as captain of the Brisbane Broncos, with whom he won the 1992 Clive Churchill Medal and Dally M Medal, as well as the club's player of the year award a record five times. |
Justin Hodges was born in Cairns on the 25 May , 1982. He began playing rugby league from the age of five but his rugby league career took off when he was selected for local representative teams, playing for Trinity Bay High School in the Coca-Cola Cup, a state competition. In 1998, Hodges was offered a four year contract with the Brisbane Broncos, he accepted the contract as part of the Broncos development players. Hodges made his first grade debut for the Brisbane Broncos against the Canberra Raiders. In his debut, Hodges played exceptionally well, saving two tries in a losing Broncos team but only ended up playing 5 games for the Broncos in his debut season. Hodges played his debut representative game in the 2002 State of Origin series. His performance will be remembered not because of his good play, but because of the embarrassing panic passes he threw within his own goal area, which lead to two New South Wales tries. Since his bad start, Hodges has redeemed himself many times over by performing exceptionally well in recent origin, test and NRL games. |
